Front and back view. The highlighted part is where this exercise works most; paler areas are helpers.

Targets: Upper chest

Primary: Chest

Secondary: Shoulders (front delts), Triceps

How to

  1. 1Place an incline bench (30 to 45 degrees) under the Smith machine bar so the bar lines up with your upper chest when you lie back.
  2. 2Unhook the bar by rotating your wrists, and lower it under control to your upper chest.
  3. 3Press it back up until your arms are straight, then re-hook the bar using the safety catches when you finish.
  4. 4Keep your feet planted and your shoulder blades pinched back against the bench.
